Joel Lukombo
Born in 1995 in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. From a young age, he was very determined, often getting carried away with drawing until late or until he had to rest or move on to other activities. Gradually, through his numerous exercises, he became noticeable in his residential Neighborhood for his copies of artworks and early attempts at caricatures.
Impressed by his talent, his parents directed him towards the Institut des Beaux-Arts (I.B.A.), a renowned school for training artists in Kinshasa. After completing his secondary education in plastic arts, specializing in painting, he pursued higher education in the same field at the académie des Beaux-Arts de Kinshasa, where he obtained his Bachelor’s degree (bac+3).
During his learning journey, he interacted with numerous artists to further enhance his skills and gain extensive experience and knowledge. While in secondary school, he spent time with the painter Kalama-Henri, who gave his work a unique touch by observing archetypes.
He continued his training with the painter Mars Muaka to deepen his art, and with the painter Jean Claude Lofenia, he developed a sense of observation and imagination for composition and finishing techniques. Subsequently, he worked with the artist Tsham Muteng to master the pen medium, which became his preferred tool.
He was attentive to advice and motivation from his mentors and fellow artists, including Monsengo Shula, JP Mika, Jean Claude Lofenia, JP Kiangu, Sam Ilus, Alfred Tshikama, Chrispain Magalhaes, Kabemba Luabingi, and Auguy Maswa.
After this commendable journey and with a critical mindset, he decided to launch his professional career by creating his own studio. In 2020, together with his colleagues, he formed a collective of young Congolese artists called « Collectif MPIKO ». Following a notable exhibition in the United States in Washington, he now resides and works in Montreal, Canada. This new environment presents an opportunity for him to enhance his skills and propel his career.
